Hot air balloons are set to take to the skies above the ancient Vietnamese town of Hoi An for the very first time as part of this month’s Tet Festival, which celebrates Vietnamese New Year.

The balloon flights will transport passengers from the town to the My Son Sanctuary, located about 40 kilometres away. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam, the organisation responsible for the flights, has said that tourists will be able to take in a variety of stunning scenery during the flight, including a coastal view and the Cham towers of My Son Sanctuary, located in central Vietnam.

The My Son Sanctuary was given status as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO back in 1999 and is site of historical significance. It has origins dating back as far as the 4th Century and features 71 monuments and 32 epitaphs.

The flights that will make up a part of the Tet Festival are set to reach heights of 400m and last between 30 and 60 minutes. Flights will be operated by the Sai Gon Star firm.

Hot air ballooning is becoming more popular around the world, especially in the UK, with a number of balloons making appearances at festivals and events, and some even being given their own dedicated shows.

As today is Balloon Ascension Day, why not launch your own ballooning opportunities and book a flight to see the sights of your local area in a hot air balloon, be it Bath, Bristol or somewhere else?
