The most celebrated romantic day of the year is Valentine’s Day. On February
14th people over the world celebrate their love. But how did it all begin?
There were several Christian Saints named Valentinus that were celebrated in
Roman Times. One of these was Saint Valentine of Rome who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry.
During his imprisonment he healed Asterius, the daughter of his jailer, and before his execution he signed a letter to her “Your Valentine”. Later on in 18th century England the tradition of courtly love evolved into an occasion where lovers expressed their feelings for each other by presenting flowers, confectionary and greeting cards known as ‘Valentines’. We still use the symbols of a heart, often red, as well as doves and Cupid!
Today, Valentine’s Day is the second busiest day of the year for greeting
card makers. However, as well as or instead of sending a greeting card, box
