The city of Bath is one of Britain’s top tourist destinations, and of course the perfect city for a romantic break. Here are some ideas for how to make your Bath romantic break special for both you and your significant other:

Romantic accommodation

Key to any romantic break is the hotel. The Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel features beautiful landscaped gardens where you can walk hand-in-hand before relaxing together in their spa. This hotel has an award-winning fine dining restaurant and luxury bedrooms.

The Bath Priory Hotel features a Michelin star restaurant that sources many of its ingredients from its own kitchen garden. Spa treatments are available in a room that overlooks a beautiful landscape.

For a smaller boutique hotel, try Harrington’s – a modern style luxury hotel. You can hire their outside hot tub for the exclusive use of you and your partner, situated in a secluded courtyard.

Romantic eating and drinking

If you decide not to eat dinner in your hotel, Bath features many great restaurants for a romantic meal for two.

Sotto Sotto serves delicious Italian food in its underground vault location. Its cosy atmosphere makes the perfect setting for an inanimate dinner.

For a traditional British afternoon tea, go to the Pump Room Restaurant. You can accompany your food with a glass of spa water from the fountain, which is over 2,000 years old.

If you want to listen to music during your romantic dinner, go to the Green Park Brasserie that features live jazz and swing music. The restaurant is housed in a converted railway station dating from the late 1800s.

If the weather is fine, you could enjoy a romantic picnic in Victoria Park or Alexander Park. Eat Cheddar Cheese produced near Bath, washed down with locally made cider. For luxury Italian food, pick up your picnic ingredients from Jamie’s Deli, co-owned by TV chef Jamie Oliver. Jamie’s features the best in Italian deli cuisine.

There are many fine bars and pubs in Bath. Circo is a luxury cocktail bar that blends the old and new in sumptuous surroundings.

Music and ale lovers are catered for at the Bell Inn. The Canary Gin Bar, as its name suggest, specialises in gin and has an upstairs Martini Bar.

A spa treatment

Bath has many spas where you can receive pampering treatments to relax and invigorate you and your partner.

The Thermae Bath Spa is special because it uses natural thermal spa water. Their Watsu treatment involves floating in warm water in a private pool while a therapist gently performs a massage that combine shiatsu with acupressure. This is one of the most relaxing treatments available in the city.

Bath Priory Hotel features a luxury spa. Its ‘Awakening Treatment’ starts with a cool mint exfoliator preceding a full body massage using oils to match your skin type.

A few miles outside Bath is the Homewood Park Hotel, which looks out over beautiful countryside. Their featured treatment is the Musclease ocean spa wrap – a seaweed body wrap that detoxifies the body. This is accompanied by a relaxing facial massage.

The Gainsborough Bath Spa uses Bath’s natural thermal spa waters. You can move from the natural thermal pools to the cool ice alcoves. Your masseur will create a massage especially suited to you and your partner’s bodies.

Luxury and unique experiences

A romantic break in Bath is a time to indulge, and there are plenty of luxury experience to choose from.

The Lady Lena is a Victorian river launch where you can enjoy a romantic peaceful ride along the Kennet & Avon canal while sipping champagne.

If you want a taste of historic luxury, hire a classic car from Vintage Classics in Wilshire. Vehicles available include the Alfa Romeo Spider, Audi Quattro Turbo and Jaguar E-Type. Enjoy a nostalgic journey along the Bath area’s country lanes and conjure up the romance of a different age.

Book exclusive use of a horse and carriage from Courtyard Carriages and experience a leisurely romantic journey through Victoria Park, the Royal Crescent, and the Circus.

Perhaps the best luxury experience in Bath is a ride in a hot air balloon. As you rise above the rooftops of Bath, you will get a unique view of the city and the surrounding countryside. Take photographs during your ride so that you can relive the memories of the flight with your partner as you grow older together.

Shopping

A romantic break is the ideal time to treat your loved one to something special. Mallory Jewellers is the destination for high end jewellery, where you can find luxury brands such as Rolex, Longchamp and Cartier.

The Mulberry Factory shop is the place to buy a luxury Mulberry handbag.

Bath Aqua Glass is located next to Bath Abbey, where you can watch craftsmen making beautiful glass objects including earrings, wine glasses, mirrors, and wall hangings. The glass blowing studio provides the opportunity for you and your partner to have a go at this tricky but enjoyable technique.

If your interest is antiques, head for the Old Bank Antiques Centre, where you will find 15 antique dealers under one roof.

Entertainment

There are plenty of entertainment options in Bath. Magic lovers go to Krowd Keepers magic theatre to see mystifying magicians.

The Theatre Royal features the best in classic and modern theatre and also hosts concerts, while theRondo Theatre is an intimate venue that hosts comedy, musicals and plays.

Popping the question

If you want the highlight of your romantic Bath break to be a marriage proposal, the city offers no shortage of ways and places to do this.

You could pop the question on the historic Palladian Bridge at Priory Park, or aboard the luxurious Lady Lena boat. You could even propose while swimming in the Thermae open air thermal bath.

Perhaps the best place for a marriage proposal is on board one of our hot air balloons as you fly high above the Bath landscape. Take a champagne bottle on board to toast the occasion, presuming your partner says ‘yes!’
