27/05/2016 philip Competitions

IMG_4646Hot air balloons recently flew across the sunny skies of Loughrea in Galway County to mark the official launch of the 2016 National Hot Air Balloon Championships, which is taking place above the town in the Autumn.

The event was officially launched by Peter Roche, who is Galway County Council’s Cathaoirleach. The Championships, which will see hot air balloon pilots battle it out, will take place between 25-30th September, using the town of Loughrea as its base on the ground.

Speaking to the Connach Tribune, Councillor Roche said:

“Forty international Balloon Teams coming to Galway is a great opportunity for the county, for the communities, business and tourism here.”

Joe Daly, the event director, noted that the event was only made possible due to the sponsorship of Galway County Council and expressed his delighted at having the Championships in Galway this year. Daly explained that the competition was being positively received by local people, companies and landowners. He said:

“Galway County is a beautiful sight from above and the teams are very excited to visit Galway for this first time. This event brings colour, wonder to both participants and spectators.”

During the event, teams from around the globe will compete against one another. There will also be a must-see mass balloon launch, and a night glow, as well as visits from hot air balloons to local schools, ensuring that the whole community gets involved.

If you can’t make it to the Galway event, there are plenty of opportunities across the UK to experience a hot air balloon ride.
