A new world record was recently set, as 100 couples got married simultaneously in the air during an event in China earlier this month.

The pilot of the balloon, Zuo Dan, gave a safety briefing to the couples to reassure them before beginning. The balloon was tethered during the ceremony, meaning that it hovered over the ground at a height of a few meters.

However, as Guinness World Records had not sanctioned the event as an official world record attempt, the record will not be ratified. This is despite beating the previous record of 50 marriages, which took place at the Love Cup in Latvia on Valentine’s Day 2016.

The record-breaking number of marriages took place as part of the World Fly-in Expo. It was held in Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province in central China, across four days from the 4th-7th November. It was organised by the Wuhan Sport Bureau, the Wuhan Economic and Technical Developing Zonem and the FIA (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale).

As well as this display of love, the event also saw a ballooning competition featuring over 1,000 balloonists, coaches and officials representing 30 different countries. The event attracted more than 300,000 visitors throughout the four days, signalling a successful inaugural expo.

Hot air balloon rides are the perfect way to mark any kind of special occasion such as a wedding or a proposal. The tranquillity and calmness of a hot air balloon trip over Bath, Bristol or anywhere else in the UK makes for a unique experience.
