The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta could be considered to be the jewel in the crown of British ballooning. The largest balloon festival in Europe, the Bristol Fiesta is a firm family favourite. Last week saw the festival – now in its 41st year – kicked off a day early because of forecast high winds for the weekend.

As a result, early bird visitors to Bristol’s Ashton Court Estate were treated to a stunning display as 130 balloons from around the world took to the skies over many of Bristol’s amazing landmarks, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Avon Gorge, and the roof of Bristol Cathedral.

An effigy of the Star Wars villain, Darth Vader, floating across the River Avon certainly made for an extraordinary sight. This crowd-funded balloon was kept company by bear-shaped balloons, and balloons in the shape of cats, and koalas, and Wellington boots. Brightly-coloured vessels of more traditional shapes also wowed the on-looking crowds.

Intrepid visitors get the opportunity to take tethered flights in hot air balloons, and for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, fun fair rides, competitions, and model ballooning were keeping them busy. The fiesta ended early with a striking firework display.

Hot air ballooning is always an activity that delights people of all ages and the countryside of the South West of England is some of the best to see from the skies. We offer hot air balloon adventures over Bristol, Bath, South Wales and Gloucester which the whole family can enjoy. Contact us now to book your place.
