This month saw the launch of the 10th annual balloon festival in Taitung County, Taiwan. Set amid the stunning mountain landscape of the Luye Plateau, the Taiwan International Balloon Festival stretches over an epic 10 weeks each summer. Musical concerts flood the local town each day. The festival has become recognised as one of the top 12 ballooning events on earth, and from the crowds that came for the first day, it is not difficult to see why.
This year’s event saw a host of curiously shaped balloons set off at dawn before a 10 thousand strong crowd. The festival boasts 10 Taiwanese balloons and 28 international balloons, some of which making their Taiwanese debut at this ballooning bonanza.
The festival offers visitors the chance to take a tethered flight above the ground. By night, the festival comes alive with music, 3D light shows, and dancing water shows. Fireworks light up the night sky, and no balloon festival would be complete without a traditional balloon glow display.
This year, the festival played host to balloons in an array of ingenious shapes, including a milk bottle, a lighthouse, a pirate parrot, and SpongeBob SquarePants.
The festival will close at the end of August 2020, giving locals plenty of time to get their fill of the stunning balloons and flying opportunities.
