June 2022 has not just brought the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations – today is also the annual Hot Air Balloon Day, which sees many festivities take place, with hot air balloon fans from across the globe taking to the skies to celebrate this passion.
For the industry though, every day is Hot Air Balloon Day, and there are plenty of fun events happening between now and the end of the year that you can use to celebrate it, or just to experience ballooning for the first time.
Taking place less than two weeks after the official Hot Air Balloon Day – on 17th and 18th June – the Cheltenham Balloon Fiesta is hosted by the racecourse, where the famous Cheltenham Festival is held each year. It offers a lively mix of hot air balloon trips over the beautiful local countryside with live music and fireworks.
There will also be a number of stalls available with drink and food choices, as ballooning can make anyone work up an appetite, plus items from local traders for sale.
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta on 11th August is the single largest event of this type in the whole of Europe. What’s more, it’s free to take part in!
That makes it the ideal way for the whole family to mark Hot Air Balloon Day in style this year. Starting off at the Ashton Court Estate, more than 100 beautifully coloured balloons will take flight with the dawn and sail over the landscape of Bristol.
This fiesta also features the Night Glows, where lit balloons float across the evening sky to a special BBC Radio Bristol soundtrack. If you have ever dreamed of seeing hot air balloons flying over Bristol, this is the way to do it.
This is another summer extravaganza that will combine hot air balloon rides with a range of other entertainment. Activities at the Oxford Balloon Festival include a fireworks display and a huge funfair, ensuring a splendid day out for people of all ages.
Oxford boasts some breath-taking scenery, and drifting over it in a balloon will let you experience the entire panorama. This festival also takes place during August, on the 19th and 20th of the month, so it will be a great belated celebration of Hot Air Balloon Day.
