Sustainable ballooning to take tourists up into the stratosphere

23/11/2022 Jo Bailey Balloon Ride Innovation

Soaring 35000 meters into the atmosphere might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but thanks to an innovative collaboration between engineers at Expleo and French aeronauts at Stratoflight, thrill-seeking tourists might soon be heading into space abord a balloon assisted space vessel in as little as three years.

Engineers are currently working on the endeavour plan to create an eight-meter long craft with a balcony to take up to four space tourists and two pilots into the skies. The craft will be carried by a hydrogen-filled balloon. Once they have reached altitude, passengers will be able to exit onto a viewing balcony. They will be able to see the curvature of the planet and whole continents before gently beginning their descent back to Earth.

Designers of this craft are keen to ensure that this endeavour is as sustainable and environmentally conscious as possible. In order to achieve this, they are using so-called ‘green’ hydrogen which is produced using solar and wind energy. The suits that passengers will wear will be designed to recycle carbon dioxide as they also protect the wearers from potentially harmful solar radiation.

For people who want to see everything that the world has to offer, a balloon fight into space might be just the ticket. For those who prefer their adventure to be closer to the ground, we offer hot air balloon flights over Bath, Bristol and other areas in the southwest of the UK.
